Chinqua Penn
Chinqua Penn Plantation is located near Readsville, North Carolina. It is a 27 room mansion. The mansion has various antique aritcles from 30 countries. There is a chair of King Tut's tomb and two Chinese boxes for a young girls's dress to be stored in the entry foyer. The Russell Stover box is where Mrs. Penn kept candy for her nieces and nephews. The Plantation is featured on A&E's America's Castles. This Historic Place is surrounded by 22 acres. The seasonal gardens and lovely landscape are beautiful to see. The home was built in 1920. Silver Candlesticks and Weiner Dogs....
I have a little story for you about my mother's Silver Candlesticks, and my Weiner Dog, Ricky. I bring it to you at the request of a fellow 'lotter. The year was 1963. I was eleven and uncertain of my place in my newly adopted family, and frankly, not my mother's biggest fan. She scared the hell out of me. She was SUCH a lady in her white gloves, pill box hats, pearls and perfect seams in her nylons. She had a air of 'regalness' about her that was reflected in her home decor and insistence that no one sit anywhere but on the very edge of her chairs and sofas......and damn, you'd better sit up STRAIGHT! Her prize possession was the Silver Candlesticks that graced her formal dining room table. They were modeled on Corinthian columns and stood about 14" high. Ricky was about 15" long, 6" off the ground and loved to hump whatever took his fancy. And could that dog climb! Runt or no, he was liked greased lightening when he wanted to get from point A to point B. Now every other Wednesday, mother hosted the neighbourhood Bridge Club at specially set up tables in the living room, with a lovely buffet lunch set out in the dining room. And...
How the rich and famous live - Bill Gates house. Amazing facts
First, for starters, Bill Gates’ house is in Medina, Washington on a 5.12 acre lot and overlooks Lake Washington. According to Wikipedia, Bill originally bought the land back in 1988 for a measly $2 million, and the mansion was built over seven years. By 1995 it was complete. As you can imagine, this is one wired house filled with new technology. One of the most interesting things you’d experience if you lived in this house is that you wear a pin containing a microchip which acts as your ID. When you walk into a room, lighting, sound, and temp controls are customized for you. Any high resolution display that you walk by will know that you’re there, and your favorite art is displayed. And if you’re getting a phone call, only the phone nearest to you will ring. This is all thanks to the pin with the microchip. Now we’ll take a look at some of the rooms in this house:Library If you were to peek inside the domed library, you’d find two "secret" bookcases with one of them containing a bar. Here you could sit in front of the fireplace and admire the Codex Leicester belonging to Leonardo da Vinci. Gates paid $30.8 million for it back in 1994. Pool House The pool building is 3,900...
Guess what I got!
I mentioned yesterday that I was going shopping. My trip was very successful. I had looked at an item online and went to the sotre to check it out in person, and it was perfect for what I was looking for! Its a Kitchen table! I've never had one, not since I've lived by myself. And now that we have a house and a little one, we figured it was time to find one for our breakfast room! We have a formal dining room, but we made it an office or, as I like to call it, E-Bay depot since I'm on the laptop where ever and the fella's on E-bay in the Depot. I'm really excited about our first meal on it, whenever that'll be! I feel like a grown up!to peek inside the domed library, you’d find two "secret" bookcases with one of them containing a bar. Here you could sit in front of the fireplace and admire the Codex Leicester belonging to Leonardo da Vinci. Gates paid $30.8 million for it back in 1994. Pool House The pool building is 3,900 square feet and has a 17 foot by 60 foot swimming pool. While you’re swimming, you can listen to your favorite music underwater with the underwater music system. Reception Hall This is where Gates plays...
What is your dream home?
I have loved and would like to own a big old fashioned Victorian 3 story house, with turrets and cupola's. With 8 bedrooms, a huge kitchen and walk in pantry and huge living room, formal dining room and 3 bathrooms on 40 acres. That is my dream home. Instead I have 23 acres and a fairly large but older modular home. What is your dream home?
Dining room or laundry room????
If you had to choose between a formal dining room and your washer and dryer in the garage or a nice laundry room and no dining room which would it be???? both floorplans have an eat-in kitchen.
If I won the lottery...
I was thinking... and if I won the lottery I would do these things, most likely in this order.*Buy a huge house, on 10+ acres in Florida or Georgia. IT would have 8 bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, a game room, family room, living room, huge eat in kitchen, formal dining room with a table for 16, and an alarm system. It would also have to have a small cottage on the back of property for family when they visit. I would need a full time maid to help with upkeep and a personal chef would be nice too.*Finish a college fund for each of my children*Buy a new family vehicle*Buy a villa in Spain, the Costa Brava region*Put myself on a decent budget and invest the rest*Give 10% of my earnings to charity every yearAs you can tell it would have to be a heafty lotto to fund my dream:) What would you buy or do if you hit the lotto?
A Question of Protocol
A dear friend of mine has a grandmother who is the epitome of the genteel, southern lady. Some years ago, when my friend was a child, he and his little brother went out to eat with his grandmother. During the meal, his younger brother farted, but he neglected to properly lift his buttocks, which resulted in such a noisy vibration on his chair that it garnered the attention of several of his fellow diners. His grandmother looked at him and said, "One must lift their buttocks when attempting that maneuver at the table. Otherwise, it vibrates too much."Do you think this is accurate? Should one lift a cheek or two when farting while seated? What is your preferred method? I wonder what Mrs. Manners would say about the proper way to fart in public. Also, what if a fart turns into a shart?
A Day at Biltmore House
Building Biltmore was a 6 year project. An entire community, of craftsmen, came in on railroad cars to build the largest house in America. Mr. Vanderbilt had his own brick factory and wood working shop. Richard Morris Hunt was the architect of the house. The house was modeled after the 16th century France. The house has 4 acres of floor space, 250 rooms, 24 bedrooms, and 65 fireplaces. The basement alone has a lighted indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, changing rooms, a two lane bowling alley, servants' quarters, 2 kitchens, and more to see. Frederick Law Olmsted designed the 125,000 acres on the ground. Frederick created Central Park in New York and was the founder of American landscape archituecture. He also started America's first managed forest, to protect the environment. George Vanderbilt opened the house on Christmas eve 1895. This was his country retreat. He had a passion for art, literature, and horticulture. George Vanderbilt married Edith Stuyvesant Dresser in 1898. George brought his bride to live with him at his home. They had one child, Cornelia. She was born and raised at Biltmore. Edith Stuyvesant Dresser (1873-1958) Cornelia (1900-1976) In 1963 William A.V....
Everyday life in Pompeii revealed
This sounds so interesting & I'm hoping I can track down a copy of the book mentioned. There is a common perception that life in the once-thriving Roman city of Pompeii is well-known from the wealth of artefacts that have been uncovered since its accidental discovery in 1748, but this is far from the case, according to findings of University of Leicester archaeologist Dr Penelope M Allison.Until recently archaeologists working on Pompeian artefacts have tended to concentrate on examples of art, some of it erotic, from the town that was suddenly destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in August 79 AD. But Dr Allison’s recently published book, The Insula of the Menander in Pompeii vol 3: the finds, a contextual study, has changed this emphasis."I am looking at pots and pans and how houses actually functioned," she said. "I am interested in revealing the utilitarian side of life rather than its glamorous side; in slaves and servants and how they lived side by side with their masters. We always assume that servants were kept out of sight, but this is a 19th century view."If we look at the distribution of domestic material in Pompeii houses, such as the cupboards...
