Starting the perfect Garden
A perfect garden is an asset to any home, not just for resale value, but also for spiritual value and it need not cost a fortune at all. Not even the upkeep should result in any exuberant fees. The first thing you need to know is that the perfect garden is the one that has the least amount of hassles and upkeep. While you might (or might not) like to dig and shuffle around in your garden over weekends, you need to know that your garden is not going to die on you if, for some reason, you are not able to take care of it anymore. There are a few ways to start a perfect garden, but the first item on your list should be to find out which plants are indigenous to your country and area. With indigenous plants your garden will not need special care. The weather will provide for its watering needs and the ground for its nutrients, so in the end you will need to do a minimum amount of watering and composting (which is also an environmental plus). The next item on your checklist should be to look at how long each plant lives. Some plants live for a year, some for two and some for as long as they have roots. Also take into consideration whether they are green all year round, tend to...
The Cat, The Pond and The Tooth Fairy House...
Don't you just love kids? As you all know, I go to my Son's house for Sunday evening dinner most weeks, and as most of you know, I have a granddaughter who keeps herself amused. Last time, it was a fairy and bug house in the garden, which pic incidentally, I still haven't uploaded to the computer.Anyway, last Sunday, I arrived, and my little granddaugher was sitting on the living room floor, sewing away at this little brown object, which I couldn't see properly. So, I asked what she was making, to which she replied, "A cat!" My daughter-in-law told me that she'd asked for the sewing box the evening before, at nine o'clock. She'd found this piece of brown material, cut out a shape for head and body, then two arms, two legs, a tail and two ears. Needless to say, even when she's on school holidays, she has to go to bed soon after nine, so she continued the next morning, producing this stuffed cat, which was about five inches in height. That done, I was called to the garden!!!:)In a corner of the garden, by the shed, she had dug a hole, long, but not awfully wide or deep, then cadged a recycled bin bag from her Mum and torn it down the seam to open it up, laid it in the hole,...
What does an ordinary tortoise eat? Do i pose any harm by feeding them with brea
What does an ordinary tortoise eat? Do i pose any harm by feeding them with bread? i'm referring to the ordinary tortoise found in a garden's pond)
Do you enjoy feeding the wild birds
Many of our once common garden birds are in decline. We gardeners can do a great deal to help our feathered friends through the cold, hungry days of winter. November is the most important month to start feeding, when nature’s autumn harvest is beginning to wear thin. But once you’ve started (and I hope you have), you must continue until at least April, when they tend to disperse to their favourite breeding grounds. Meantime, they have become dependant on you. Don’t let them down. However, it is now generally recognised that feeding beyond April is important, and indeed there is much evidence to support year round feeding. Supplementary food in the breeding season can sometimes prove vital. Traditionally, birdfood has been scraps and wasteproducts. But more recent research has shown just how harmful this can be. Some products sold were (and still are if you buy the cheap stuff) toxic to birds. Our feeding must emulate nature as closely as possible – ie natural products without chemicals which are already doing so much harm to our native bird population. When feeding, in practical terms, remember that there are two distinct feeding types. Clinging feeders (T i ts and...
fears and phobias
Ok my fear is dogs, my husband is petrified of frogs, this is a big problem as we have a garden pond so and breeding time of the year i'm forever being called into the garden to remove the offending creature, I rehome them in the brook near my sons home, now then what are your fears and who has the most unusual one to birds. Our feeding must emulate nature as closely as possible – ie natural products without chemicals which are already doing so much harm to our native bird population. When feeding, in practical terms, remember that there are two distinct feeding types. Clinging feeders (T i ts and Finches, for example), and ground feeders like Thrushes, Blackbirds and Robins. Obviously, then, you need to provide for both – by scattering food on the ground, and providing hanging feeders for the “clingers”. A compromise is the old traditional bird table, which offers a platform for ground feeders (above cat height, which is an advantage!), but is also accessible by virtue of height, to clingers. A useful point to remember, though, is to site your bird table, or your hanging feeders, in an open location, not within the spread of shrubs or trees....
Caring for frogs/tpads in the garden?
I have adult frogs living in my garden pond. We found them in a nearby stream and are trying to get them established. When can we expect them to spawn tadpoles if all goes well? Is it true that they eat some of the spawn?
Fish varieties that can be put in a water garden?
Someone out there has got to know and have more experience with this than I do. I've looked all over the net and keep coming up with the same answer. Yeah, I know, Koi. We're kind of bored with the same old look though. We'd like to know what fish we can add to our fish/garden pond. Fish that can live outdoors and with Koi. Fish with color. Not plane old pond fish. Something with yellow would be great. Please Help!
